The Irony

Often when nothing to say,
We speak –
Tossing mouthfuls
That clutter space
Meant for feelings.

Often when we must speak,
We prefer silence –
Stifling feelings
That urgently plead
For an eloquent dress.

Loved the title and the lines:

"We prefer silence –
Stifling feelings
That urgently plead
For an eloquent dress."

So often, we say things to fill space, and stifle things that should be said.

Well done!

Very true! What can be said through poetry can perhaps never be expressed in any other form.

This is a great little vignette. You capture so well that impulse to speak when there is nothing to say. Especially, I like the references to "clutter" space and "eloquent dress." Those are rather intelligent and insightful.

However, if I may make a suggestion: I like the first line needs just a little work. It seems to be missing a word or two.

How about:

Often, when there's nothing to say
We still speak . . .

or

Even when there's nothing to say
We still speak . . .
